LRC CHAIRS THE RE-LAUNCH OF PROJECT CITIZEN AND INAUGURATION OF BOARD OF PATRONS AND ALUMNI NETWORK

Recently LRC’s Executive Director, Ms. Daphne Lariba Nabila, chaired the re-launch of Project Citizen. Project Citizen is an exciting opportunity of in-school youths aged 11-18 to research into community and national problems and work together to come up with innovative solutions to those problems. The theme for the event was "Advancing together- the youth at the forefront"
Over the years issues such as Drug Menace, HIV-Aids, Sanitation and Road Crashes have all been addressed. Students involved in the project learn Community Involvement, teamwork and become part of the solution. Furthermore, students who participate from the senior level develop research, writing, public speaking and graphic design skills which will help them later in life.
So far Project Citizen covers 195 institutions, including 2 schools for the blind and 3 schools for the deaf. At competition level Accra High School became the overall winner in 2006 in the African Regional Showcase, and again winning an award in 2007 in Washington DC. Also, Christ the King International School was granted a school bus after the students brought attention to the effects of the lack of a school bus on their activities.
The project is currently limited to selected schools only, however, the commission intends to expand the scope of the project to cover all schools in Ghana as well as involving out-of-school youth.

With the provision Legal Aid Scheme across the country, through the Legal Aid Scheme Act 1997, (Act 542), lower income persons can now access justice and have their electoral disputes heard or represented when charged by the State. This is as a result of the scheme providing legal representation in court, legal advice, and mediation with parties in connection with electoral disputes as well as providing financial waivers in filing cases to court for these persons especially those in the rural areas.
